Database Highlights: TumbleBooks Improves its AudioBookCloud

One of the great features of TumbleBooks' AudioBookCloud has been its ease of use: just
click and listen.

Unlimited access, no downloads, no holds.

But for it to be a true "Cloud" collection, the books needed to work on anyand every mobile device.

But because their audio book player was created in Flash, their great audiobooks could not be accessed by patrons with iPads, iPhones, iTouches, andother phones and tablets.

That has now changed!!!

Every book in the audio book cloud collection is now being converted into a format which will allow access fromany and every mobile device and tablet- including iPads and iPhones.

They have converted the first batch of books and you can test out the first title in any of their 6 categories ( Action, American Gangster, 1984, etc)

Users will now have a true "Cloud" experience and be able to listen
to audio books with any device- anywhere that has wifi or an internet
connection.

Database Highlights

Barr Library is pleased to bring you a new monthly series highlighting different databases available through the Library's Databases webpage

This month will focus on the Gale Virtual Refernce Library.

This is a nice aggregator for encyclopedias and other reference type materials covering a wide variety of topics including: •Arts •Biography •Business •Education •Environment •General Reference •History •Law •Literature •Medicine •Multicultural Studies •Nation and World •Religion •Science •Social Science •Technology •Travel.

This database could be particularly useful for Travel as you don't usually find travel guides in databases as well as Medicine because it includes several books in the Health Reference Series as well as books on specific ailments that you're not going to find as easily in one of the more serious medical databases.  The History section is also quite well rounded.

Lunch Bunch's personal picks!

August’s Lunch Bunch Book Discussion was all about what its members are finding notable reads.  Here’s a list and summary of the books they talked about.
Join us Wednesday, September 5, at 11:00 AM for a discussion of Paul Coelho’s The Alchemist.
Fallen Founder – Nancy Isenberg
With Fallen Founder, Nancy Isenberg plumbs rare and obscure sources to shed new light on everyone’s favorite founding villain. The Aaron Burr whom we meet through Isenberg’s eye-opening biography is a feminist, an Enlightenment figure on par with Jefferson, a patriot, and most importantly a man with powerful enemies in an age of vitriolic political fighting. Revealing the gritty reality of eighteenth-century America, Fallen Founder is the authoritative restoration of a figure whom ran afoul of history and a much-needed antidote to the hagiography of the revolutionary era.
Daemon – Daniel Suarez
When a designer of computer games dies, he leaves behind a program that unravels the Internet's interconnected world. It corrupts, kills, and runs independent of human control. It's up to Detective Peter Sebeck to wrest the world from the malevolent virtual enemy before its ultimate purpose is realized: to destroy civilization.
Coldest Winter Ever – Sister Souljah
Renowned hip-hop artist, writer, and activist Sister Souljah brings the streets of New York to life in a powerful and utterly unforgettable first novel.
"I came busting into the world during one of New York's worst snowstorms, so my mother named me Winter.”
Ghetto-born, Winter is the young, wealthy daughter of a prominent Brooklyn drug-dealing family. Quick-witted, sexy, and business-minded, she knows and loves the streets like the curves of her own body. But when a cold Winter wind blows her life in a direction she doesn't want to go, her street smarts and seductive skills are put to the test of a lifetime.
Unwilling to lose, this ghetto girl will do anything to stay on top.
One Hundred and One Nights – Benjamin Buchholz
After 13 years in America, Abu Saheeh has returned to his native Iraq, a nation transformed by the American military presence. Alone in a new city, he has exactly what he wants: freedom from his past. Then he meets Layla, a whimsical fourteen-year-old girl who enchants him with her love of American pop culture. Enchanted by Layla's stories and her company, Abu Saheeh settles into the city's rhythm and begins rebuilding his life. But two sudden developments--his alliance with a powerful merchant and his employment of a hot-headed young assistant--reawaken painful memories, and not even Layla may be able to save Abu Saheeh from careening out of control and endangering all around them.

A breathtaking tale of friendship, love, and betrayal, One Hundred and One Nights is an unforgettable novel about the struggle for salvation and the power of family.
The Book Lover – Maryann McFadden
Ruth Hardaway has had one passion all her life: books. For thirty years she's devoted her life to her book store, trying to bury her painful past. But now the store is in jeopardy, and the past is catching up with her. Lucinda Barrett lost everything in a life-shattering betrayal. Desperate, she goes after one last dream - to be an author. Alone and broke, she embarks on a journey, eventually landing on Ruth's doorstep. Ruth takes Lucy under her wing, championing her book and even offering her refuge at a nearby lake cabin. In return, she wants Lucy to keep an eye on her son, Colin, who's recovering from a war injury. As the two women grow closer and begin to face the past, neither has any idea that their toughest decisions lie ahead - or that their friendship is about to fall apart because of a little white lie.
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle – David Wroblewski
The extraordinary debut novel that became a modern classic.

Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life with his parents on their farm in remote northern Wisconsin. For generations, the Sawtelles have raised and trained a fictional breed of dog whose remarkable gift for companionship is epitomized by Almondine, Edgar's lifelong friend and ally. Edgar seems poised to carry on his family's traditions, but when catastrophe strikes, he finds his once-peaceful home engulfed in turmoil.
Forced to flee into the vast wilderness lying beyond the Sawtelle farm, Edgar comes of age in the wild, fighting for his survival and that of the three yearling dogs who accompany him, until the day he is forced to choose between leaving forever or returning home to confront the mysteries he has left unsolved.
Filled with breathtaking scenes—the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a fateful vision rendered in the falling rain—The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is a meditation on the limits of language and what lies beyond, a brilliantly inventive retelling of an ancient story, and an epic tale of devotion, betrayal, and courage in the American heartland.

The dishes impart the intoxicating flavors of fantastic lust, grief, jealousy, and all the other passions that permeate this sensual love story. The heroine, Tita, is the youngest of three daughters. Practically raised in the kitchen, she is expected to spend her life waiting on Mama Elena and never to marry. Her habitual torment increases when her beloved Pedro becomes engaged to one of her sisters. Tita and he are thrown into tantalizing proximity and manage to communicate their affection through the dishes she prepares for him and his rapturous appreciation. March Lunch Bunch Book Discussion

The Lunch Bunch will be discussing Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay on Wednesday, March 7 @ 11AM.  Pick up your copy at the Library today!

From Booklist:

Virtuoso Chabon takes intense delight in the practice of his art, and never has his joy been more palpable than in this funny and profound tale of exile, love, and magic. In his last novel, The Wonder Boys (1995), Chabon explored the shadow side of literary aspirations. Here he revels in the crass yet inventive and comforting world of comic-book superheroes, those masked men with mysterious powers who were born in the wake of the Great Depression and who carried their fans through the horrors of war with the guarantee that good always triumphs over evil. In a luxuriant narrative that is jubilant and purposeful, graceful and complex, hilarious and enrapturing, Chabon chronicles the fantastic adventures of two Jewish cousins, one American, one Czech. It's 1939 and Brooklynite Sammy Klayman dreams of making it big in the nascent world of comic books. Joseph Kavalier has never seen a comic book, but he is an accomplished artist versed in the "autoliberation" techniques of his hero, Harry Houdini. He effects a great (and surreal) escape from the Nazis, arrives in New York, and joins forces with Sammy. They rapidly create the Escapist, the first of many superheroes emblematic of their temperaments and predicaments, and attain phenomenal success. But Joe, tormented by guilt and grief for his lost family, abruptly joins the navy, abandoning Sammy, their work, and his lover, the marvelous artist and free spirit Rosa, who, unbeknownst to him, is carrying his child. As Chabon--equally adept at atmosphere, action, dialogue, and cultural commentary--whips up wildly imaginative escapades punctuated by schtick that rivals the best of Jewish comedians, he plumbs the depths of the human heart and celebrates the healing properties of escapism and the "genuine magic of art" with exuberance and wisdom. ~ Donna Seaman
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is the winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

February Lunch Bunch Book Discussion

The Lunch Bunch will be discussing Paul Theroux's Ghost Train to the Eastern Star:  On the Tracks of the Great Railway Bazaar on Wednesday, February 1 @ 11AM.  Pick up your copy at the Library today!

From Booklist:

*Starred Review* Realizing that many travel writers never retrace their steps, Theroux decides to travel as he did in his landmark book The Great Railway Bazaar (1975): east, across Europe and Asia, by train. Taking detours due to political unrest—Iran refuses a visa, and Afghanistan seems risky—he still manages a reasonable approximation: Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, and, finally, back across Russia, on the Trans-Siberian Express. Some places are hardly recognizable, while others seem not to have changed at all. (In the former USSR, he sees scenes that look authentic to czarist times.) As thoughtful and observant as ever—his unerring skill as an interviewer despite the somewhat difficult personality he presents to readers remains a fascinating paradox—this trip finds Theroux reflecting not only on changes to the landscape but also to himself. And where in Dark Star Safari (2003), Theroux seemed out of sorts, upset with tourists and aid workers alike, here, headed east through a West-looking world, he’s in heaven despite—or because of—the lack of creature comforts. A wonderful book infused with the insights of maturity, this succeeds on many levels while also doing what the best travel writing can’t help but do: make the reader want to hit the road. Moreover, it’s a reminder that in this age of increasingly homogenous urban centers and easy air travel, those who really want to discern national differences should stay on the ground. --Keir Graff
